Case Study In Progress
Background:
The Issaquah Open Studio Tour is a full-day event where 10 local artists, chosen by a jury, open their studios to the public. Their goal is to build an art community outside of the nearby big cities, showing that art lives everywhere, as well as to grow their audience from last year. A wide variety of artists are participating, from potters to print makers, painters, and woodworkers.

How can I design an eye-catching poster and associated materials to draw in potential Studio Tour attendees?
First Drafts
After discussing with my client, I determined the three main characteristics of the Issaquah Open Studio Tours were: Expressive, Welcoming, and Professional. Using these as my guides, I made three moodboards to express combinations of these characteristics, and three first drafts for my client to choose between.
Expressive and Professional:
Wild, but contained in a grid
Asymmetrical
Plenty of white space
Photographic collage
Sans Serif fonts
high contrast
black white red
Fine Art Imagery - sculptures, gold frames, still lives, etc
Analog + Digital textures

Welcoming and Professional:
Museum Tour, Pioneer Square Art Walk
Toned down
Mild
Simple
Clear
Iconic
Friendly
Warm
Rounded sans-serif fonts or traditional serifs
limited palette
lower contrast - (not black and white) - dark blue/brown/grey, pastels, muted neutral natural colors,
Warm colors for warmth and friendliness
Fine Art Imagery - sculptures, gold frames, still lives, etc
Expressive & Welcoming:
Bright colors
Layered
Textured
Organic
Loose

Handwritten text
Analog (traditional media)
